Explore the impact of MATHstream's math videos on student learning at this Texas school district.
Imagine classrooms all over the nation transformed into hubs of energetic problem-solving. Spring Independent School District (Spring ISD) in Texas achieved this with MATHstream™, the only adaptive, interactive video streaming platform for grades 6-12.
NBC Nightly News: Kids Edition recently sent a film crew to Spring ISD to see it firsthand! They interviewed teachers and students about their experiences with MATHstream and how it's made learning math more engaging.
They also interviewed Deirdre Kelly, who has 1.4 million followers on TikTok as @the_mrskelly, and is one of the teachers who deliver lessons in our interactive math video solution.
See how MATHstream puts students in the driver's seat of their learning and ignites a lifelong love of math.
"MATHstream is in a league of its own."
Spring ISD began implementing MATHstream in the 2023-24 school year. Jo'NeQui'a Powers, a math teacher in the district, is impressed by how unique this video streaming solution is, saying, “MATHstream is in a league of its own. To be honest, I can't compare anything else to MATHstream because when I think about it, these are TikTok stars doing what they love."
The MATHstream instructors, dubbed MATHstreamers, include several content creators, like Howie Hua and Robert Ahdoot. But Mrs. Kelly, as a woman of color, has been especially inspirational to the girls at Spring ISD.
Sixth-grader Scarlett shares with NBC, "Miss Kelly looks like me,” before flashing a big smile.
Another sixth-grader, Layla, says of Mrs. Kelly, “She's like a role model. Girls can do whatever they want, like they can do math, they can do English. It's not all about boys; girls can do it too.”
MATHstream is also uniquely powerful in providing immediate feedback on individual student performance, which is crucial for fostering a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
Sixth-grader Justice shares, "I like MATHstream because when I get a question wrong or right, it gives me the opportunity to see why it's wrong and why it's right."
Boosting student math achievement
The impact of MATHstream on student achievement has been evident in assessment scores.
Jasmine Wyatt, an eighth-grade math teacher, notes significant improvements. "We just finished our math testing for the end of the year, and I have seen huge gains in about 80 percent of my students," she reports.
One of her students improved their State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) score dramatically from 205 to 292 since they started using the interactive math video streaming platform.
Principal Cecelia Brumsley shares that in one class, students who started using MATHstream skyrocketed from 20-30% on STAAR practice sessions to an impressive 70-80%.
With such positive outcomes, MATHstream is proving to be a powerful ally in preparing students with the mathematical skills they need to succeed.
Empowering teachers along the way
Teachers are also finding MATHstream a valuable tool in their instructional arsenal.
Brandy Williams, a sixth-grade math teacher, uses the solution to enhance her teaching methods.
"MATHstream has been a wonderful addition to our math curriculum," she said. "When I'm in a small group with my kids, I'm able to put my students onto MATHstream. They're able to receive a reteach of the lesson that I taught for the day."
For first-year teachers, MATHstream has become a crucial support system. Principal Brumsey recounts the experience of one such teacher: "He feels a lot more confident now because he has the support of MATHstream, and it allows him to know exactly what students need."
She adds, “It's helped build confidence in my first-year teachers."
Transforming math education at Spring ISD
Spring ISD's journey with MATHstream shows how an innovative, interactive math video streaming platform can transform instruction and improve student outcomes. Because of the district's unwavering dedication to delivering top-quality education, Spring ISD student Blake says what all educators want to hear: “I feel more confident in math."
