There are educators all over the country bringing the LONG + LIVE + MATH Movement to life in their worlds. We'd like to introduce you to some of them.
She's the math department chair at Global Impact STEM Academy, an innovative new school in Springfield, Ohio that's in its 5th year of operation. Global Impact takes a unique and creative approach to education. Monica says, "We create an environment with high expectations that students describe to be more like a college atmosphere. We integrate technology and projects whenever possible/applicable. We partner with many local businesses to create meaningful projects which help students create authentic products. We are also a mastery-based school in which students may remediate to show mastery on content."
Global Impact STEM Academy uses the Carnegie Learning Middle School and High School Math Solution to foster this type of environment, pushing students beyond the classroom and into a meaningful future.
According to Monica, the Carnegie Learning Math Solution was a perfect fit for Global Impact. "I love that the resources make the classroom more student-centered and less teacher-led." This was a shift for students who were used to more traditional direct instruction, but they persevered and are now seeing the benefits. "As the school year went on, I could see a shift in the classroom as collaboration was no longer forced and students seemed to be retaining information better over time." Monica is proud of how her students handled the transformation. "Students are collaborating and comfortable to share their thoughts and ideas without fear of judgment."
Monica is excited to see the math classrooms at Global Impact continue to shift as students get more comfortable with the new resources and classroom structure. She says, "As an educator, I am also excited to continue to learn and grow and try using the resources in different, unique ways in my classroom."
