There are educators all over the country bringing the LONG + LIVE + MATH Movement to life in their worlds. We'd like to introduce you to some of them.
Michael Chavez, the new Superintendent of Hatch Valley Public Schools, is committed to improving math learning in his district. And to do so, he brought in the big guns... Carnegie Learning. More specifically, he brought in Jami Koustik, one of our brilliant Master Math Practitioners.
So far this year, Jami has provided:
Jami has been really impressed by the willingness of the teachers at Hatch Valley to change from direct instruction to a more student-centered collaborative classroom. "We set individual goals," she says. "Some teachers are trying to be cautious about how much they speak vs. how much students speak. Some are focused on picking the best problem and letting students really think about and understand it instead of trying to cover everything on every page."
In our blended learning model, the teachers have students work individually in the MATHia software for 90 minutes a week to complement the group learning taking place with the consumable text. "The teachers are diving in with 100% effort,” Jami says. “It’s amazing."
Hatch Valley is looking forward to seeing exciting results at the end of the year. Michael says, "Our teachers are already seeing success in their classrooms and asking for more professional learning, so we know it's working!"
We are thrilled to partner with them to drive better learning outcomes for their students and will continue to share updates along the way!
