The purpose of the following academies is to strengthen teachers’ mathematical understanding. The activities teachers will experience are not meant to be reproduced for their students. The academies have been designed independent of implementing a Carnegie Learning curriculum. Teachers participating in this course will benefit from the experience even if they are using instructional materials from other publishers.
Designed for teachers grades 4-5, the Developing Mathematical Understanding course has three goals: to deepen teachers’ own understanding of mathematics, to develop their mathematical reasoning and problem solving capabilities, and to provide teachers with opportunity to reflect on and develop their own teaching practice. During the course, teachers will examine mathematical tasks and the impact of their cognitive demand, develop conceptual understanding of fractions, examine the relationship between fractions and division of whole numbers, and define and use ratios, rates and proportions. Teachers will experience a learner-centered approach to broaden their understanding of algebra and a standards-based pedagogy.
Designed for teachers grades 6-8, the Developing Algebraic Thinking course has three goals: to deepen teachers’ own understanding of mathematics, to develop their mathematical reasoning and problem solving capabilities, and to provide teachers with opportunity to reflect on and develop their own teaching practice. During the course, teachers will examine mathematical tasks and the impact of their cognitive demand, use multiple representations to study functions, compare quantities with ratios and proportions, and define the similarities and differences between linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. Teachers will experience a learner-centered approach to broaden their understanding of algebra and a standards-based pedagogy.
