What is unique about the Cognitive Tutor solution?
Carnegie Learning’s curricula are based on more than two decades of cognitive science research at Carnegie Mellon University studying how students think, learn, and apply new knowledge in mathematics. By combining software, text, and classroom instruction, the program identifies weaknesses in a student’s mastery of mathematical concepts, customizes prompts to focus on areas where the student is struggling, and provides the teacher with a report on each student’s progress. Contemporary word problem scenarios as well as unique features such as an onscreen “skillometer” – which continually tracks the students’ progress – are designed to keep students engaged and positive. The U.S. Department of Education recognizes Carnegie Learning’s Cognitive Tutor Algebra I program as one of only two math curricula scientifically proven to have significant, positive effects on student learning.

How were the curricula developed?
Carnegie Learning's mathematics curricula are based on the "ACT" theory developed by Dr. John R. Anderson, a world-renowned cognitive scientist and professor of Psychology and Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Anderson is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences. The Cognitive Tutor curricula have been developed and refined by over 20 years of research. The curricula have been field tested in a variety of instructional settings. Classroom teachers are instrumental in Carnegie Learning's product development and testing processes.
