Carnegie Learning Online and the Carnegie Learning Resource Center

Carnegie Learning OnlineCarnegie Learning is hard at work putting the finishing touches on the 2008-2009 software release. The release brings the launch of our new website for accessing the Cognitive Tutor software: Carnegie Learning Online! As part of the launch, all of our customers that use Remote Access to run the Cognitive Tutor software will now be able to access the software from any computer with a high-speed Internet connection – no Remote Access CDs required!

Also as part of the new release, we will be updating our K-12 Community with a new look and a new name: Carnegie Learning Resource Center! The updated site will continue to offer access to a variety of helpful features and documents.

Teachers and administrators that have used the K-12 Community in the past will continue to use their K-12 login for the new Carnegie Learning Resource Center website. The features that were available on the K-12 Community will still be available after the new site goes live.

Carnegie Learning Resource CenterFor the first time, students will be able to access the software online as well! This will make it easier for students to use the Cognitive Tutor software at home. Students will be required to register with the Carnegie Learning Resource Center before obtaining access.

And as the school year progresses, more new content will be added. We are currently preparing new textbook content, customer support video help files and more.

The new Carnegie Learning Online and the Carnegie Learning Resource Center will launch July 9, 2008. Please contact us with any questions that you may have.

Carnegie Learning Annouces new Professional Development Opportunities

Carnegie Learning’s Educational Services department is excited to announce a new cadre of professional development opportunities for teachers. With offerings for teachers of kindergarten through high school, Content Academies are designed for teachers who are looking to expand their content knowledge and increase their ability to problem solve and reason, all while reflecting on their own teaching practices. In each of our Content Academies, teachers will experience a learner-centered approach to broaden their understanding of mathematics and a standards-based pedagogy.

We are offering two five-day courses: Developing Algebraic Thinking (DAT) and Developing Mathematical Understanding (DMU). Most appropriate for middle school math teachers or secondary special educators, DAT participants will examine mathematical tasks and the impact of their cognitive demand, use multiple representations to study functions, compare quantities with ratios and proportions, and define the similarities and differences between linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. DMU participants, teachers of fourth and fifth grade, will also examine mathematical tasks and the impact of their cognitive demand; additionally, they will develop a conceptual understanding of fractions, examine the relationship between fractions and division of whole numbers, and define and use ratios, rates and proportions.

Our three-day Mini-Academies offer a shorter experience for teachers of grades K-8. Participants in these courses explore mathematical content using Carnegie Learning Bridge to Algebra and/or Algebra I textbooks and software. The four academies are Early Fraction Concepts, Number Properties and Integers, Connecting Decimals and Percents to Fractions, and Proportional Reasoning and Linear Relations. Although the sessions are shorter, the overarching goals of increasing teacher content knowledge and problem-solving ability and reflecting instructional practice remain.

The entire Educational Services Team at Carnegie Learning is available to answer any questions that you may have about these courses. For information about the content of these academies, please contact pd@carnegielearning.com. If your school or district is interested in hosting a Content Academy, please contact your Regional Account Manager.
