Carnegie Learning Website Changes for 2008-2009
As part of the ongoing process to improve our website experience, we have redesigned and reorganized our three main customer websites for 2008-2009.

Carnegie Learning™ Online
The Carnegie Learning™ Online website allows our customers to run the Cognitive Tutor® software from any computer with a high-speed Internet connection.
The site was redesigned over the summer, and new features include a System Requirements Tool that allows users to test their computer’s settings for compatibility with the online version of the software.
Carnegie Learning™ Resource Center
Our popular teacher resources website, the K-12 Community, was updated with a new look and a new name: the Carnegie Learning Resource Center. The updated site will continue to offer access to a variety of helpful features and documents.
Teachers and administrators that have used the K-12 Community in the past can continue to use their K-12 login for the new Carnegie Learning Resource Center website. All of the features that were available on the K-12 Community are still available, and will be adding more content throughout the school year.
For the first time, students will be able to access the software online as well! This will make it easier for students to use the Cognitive Tutor software at home. Students will be required to register with the Carnegie Learning Resource Center before obtaining access, and will be required to use their assigned School ID.
CarnegieLearning.com
Our main website was also redesigned. In particular, the homepage is more streamlined and allows easier access to our most popular content. The homepage also features our new Video Vault content, which includes new success story videos filmed this past spring at schools in Chicago, IL and Lewisport , KY. We are extremely proud to share these video success stories, and are even more proud of the students and teachers that participated.
The product section – now titled "Math Solutions" – features our updated product lineup, including Blended Curriculum Solutions, Textbook Solutions, and our new Adaptive Math Solutions that feature the Cognitive Tutor software.
We have also updated all of our product Scope and Sequence files, table of contents files for our textbooks and Cognitive Tutor software, and have added a new Product Catalog for 2008-2009.
We hope these updates continue to provide you with the best possible website experience. Please contact us with any questions that you may have, or to send us ideas for future enhancements.
Cognitive Tutor Software Feature Spotlight: Administrative Reports
Carnegie Learning is now offering new Administrative Reports as part of your Cognitive Tutor software license. Administrative Reports allow teachers and administrators to monitor student progress within the Cognitive Tutor software.
With this new functionality, district administrators can view data from all subscribing schools or select individual campuses. Even better, district administrators can view performance by class within a school campus. They can also set up preferences for reporting periods like beginning to end of a semester or beginning to end of a school year.
This is a great tool for monitoring whether student activity is keeping pace with expectations for completing units of study prior to key milestones in the school year, like the close of semester period or scheduled exams. Report administrators can also use the data to plan for intervention for students who are not meeting expectations and may need additional academic support.
Reports can be generated on screen, printed, or emailed to you on a regular schedule. Report topics include:
- District Report
- School Report
- Task Report
- Organization Comparison Report
- Unit Comparison Report
To activate your Administrative Reports account, please contact the Carnegie Learning Customer Support team at 888.851.7094 Option 3 or help@carnegielearning.com.

Success Story: Change Proves to be Good For Doral Academy Charter High School
Doral Academy Charter High School in Miami Dade, FL had
two major problems with their math program that needed to be
solved. The first problem was students’ comprehension of
math. For example, students were having difficulty devising an
equation from the information provided in a math problem that
they had read. The second and larger problem was a lack of
student motivation to learn. Math often times has a negative
stigma associated with it, and students needed a program that
was going to make them want to learn.
Doral Academy began to search for a new math curriculum that
would address the needs of their students and at the same time
align with the school’s goals, including:
- Providing highly qualified instructors who are dedicated to the academic, technological and artistic development of students.
- Providing students an integrated and challenging curriculum as well as learning experiences that meet and surpass national standards
- Fostering positive character development and citizen ship qualities that will enable students to become productive members of society.
- Encouraging parent and community involvement.
Carnegie Learning™ Algebra I and Geometry math curricula were selected based on:
- Incorporation of technology within instructional material
- Web-based software allowed students to move forward at their own pace
- Motivational component to learn
Carnegie Learning was implemented in the 2005-2006 school
year as the core curricula. Teachers used the 60/40 approach,
where 60% of the class time was spent on teacher guided
instruction, and 40% of the class time was spent doing selfdirected
learning.
Initial reactions by teachers and students was a feeling of hesitation
because the program is so different from traditional math
courses. But with the Carnegie Learning collaborative classroom
approach, teachers adjusted from delivering lectures to
becoming coaches and students became more engaged in
doing math and thinking for themselves.
Students did, however, take to the computer aspect and different
teaching style rather quickly and results began to show.
Passing rates in Algebra and Geometry increased substantially.
The program’s design of questioning and repetitiveness
allowed students to reach a deeper level of understanding.
Students also gained confidence in mathematics and the math
skills they acquired extended into other subjects, too.
Teachers enjoyed the assistance that the Cognitive Tutor® software
gave them. It made the administrative part of teaching
easier and less time consuming and allowed the teachers to
devote more time to their students. Students’ progression was
monitored in real time allowing data to be produced at a
moment’s notice. Administrative Reports not only allowed
teachers to view each student’s progress and areas of strength
and weakness, but allowed teaches to print and share that
information with parents.
Doral Academy continued to implement Carnegie Learning in
the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school year, and positive results
were shown:
- For 11th and 12th grade testing, 87% of the students tested met graduation requirements in math.
- In the 2006-07 school year 81% of the students in the lowest 25% of the school made learning gains in math.
- Math score improvements:
- 9th grade students improved math scores from 50% in 2003 to 82% in 2007
- 10th grade students showed a 15% gain, achieving math proficiency at 82%
Doral Academy fully expects positive results to continue to be produced as they continue their implementation of Carnegie Learning curricula. |
