Carnegie Learning™ Adaptive Math Solutions
This month, we’d like to focus on the recently launched Adaptive Math Solutions product line. Many of our customers have been using these Cognitive Tutor® software-only solutions to supplement their core curricula. Others use the software for interventions and credit recovery programs. With the school year well underway, you may have found a need for a software supplement in your own classroom environment, and the Adaptive Math Solutions are a perfect fit.
Some of the most important features of our Adaptive Math Solutions are:
- Continuous formative assessment
- Mastery learning model and multi-step problems
- Immediate feedback and positive reinforcement
- Detailed reports for analyzing student progress
- Review Mode for practice prior to exams
To help our customers understand exactly how the Cognitive Tutor differentiates instruction, we’ve created a new animation that walks through three different student usage scenarios. We invite you to view this new animation at the following URL: http://www.carnegielearning.com/di_animation/

Our featured success story, below, is about a high school successfully using the Adaptive Math Solution. As always, if you have any questions about any of our mathematics solutions, please contact us.

Carnegie Learning™ Adaptive Math Solutions Boosts Test Scores in Mississippi
In Mississippi, objective difficulty level is measured by “Depth of Knowledge”. North Forrest High School was unable to find a textbook that had problems with the depth of knowledge above a level one or two. In the 2007-2008 school year, they chose Carnegie Learning™ Adaptive Math Solutions as a supplemental solution to help raise test scores on their state assessment, the Subject Area Testing Program for Algebra I.
Jessica Tutor, who has been a math teacher for 14 years, dedicated 90 minutes per week for her students to use the Cognitive Tutor® software. Students were assigned units and given a time frame for completing them.
Jessica implemented the adaptive software because it gave her the freedom to move the students around within the curriculum according to their learning needs. “It is a great way to review the previous skills taught, and for some students who work faster than others, it gives them a terrific introduction to a new topic.” She also found that students enjoyed being able to work at their own pace and the freedom to work from any computer - in school or at home. Overall her students felt a sense of accomplishment at their success.
Carnegie Learning helped provide each student with opportunities for intellectual stimulation, self realization, and emotional growth in an effort to prepare them for an ever changing society, all in accordance with Forest County’s mission statement. “Students are challenged through a series of problems and with each problem, students become more confident in their abilities to do math”, says Jessica. “After a year of working with Carnegie Learning Adaptive Math Solutions, my students’ tackle problems head on instead of running from them.”
In 2007-08 the level of difficulty on the SATP for Algebra I increased. Consequently, the pass rates in schools declined across the state. In fact, the average pass rate was 71.8%, a dramatic drop from previous the 90.8% pass rate in the 2006-2007 school year. How did North Forrest High School fare? Eighty percent of their students scored advanced or proficient. The students at North Forrest High School outperformed students in other schools in the state. Tutor believes the implementation of Carnegie Learning Adaptive Math Solutions helped contribute to the gains the students posted.
“I love Carnegie Learning Adaptive Math. It makes students work and holds them accountable for their own progress. It is well worth the investment.”
Jessica M. Tutor, Teacher
“Carnegie Learning made me a better math student."
