Looking for a Summer School Solution This Year?

Although much of the country is in the midst of a cold spell this January, summer will be here before you know it. But instead of being excited for summer break, anxiety can be running high for many of your students as they near the end of the school year. If a student is falling behind or is not prepared for the next year of math courses, they may need help in the summer months. The fact is, more than a quarter of the schools in the US are now requiring summer school for their students that are behind grade level, and that number is sure to grow in the coming years.

Carnegie Learning ‘s Cognitive Tutor has proven to be a successful tool in summer school, remediation and intervention programs across the US. As always, if you need supplemental mathematics support for your students, contact your local Carnegie Learning representative. They can help you with additional product support, professional development ideas, and creative implementation ideas that will assure student success for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years.

Carnegie Learning’s 2009 Math Webinar Series Begins in February

This year we are also pleased to announce the 2009 Math Webinar Series. With budget restrictions a reality for many districts, Carnegie Learning is aware that traveling to conferences may be difficult for many educators. Our FREE Math Webinar Series consists of monthly online seminars featuring top educational leaders, with topics covering Algebra Readiness, Developmental Math, and Response to Intervention (RTI) and more. We hope that you will join us for all of these free online events in 2009! For more information or to register, visit http://www.carnegielearning.com/events.

Featured Success Story

Carnegie Learning proves extraordinary success in Algebra I pilot program at Georgetown ISD, TX

Georgetown, TexasTexas was one of the first states requiring students to take and pass Algebra II in order to graduate from high school. Texas is also one of 27 states that requires an exit or end of course exam for graduation. The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) is a standardized test used in Texas primary and secondary schools to assess students' attainment of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies skills required under Texas education standards.

Georgetown Independent School District has a large number of students repeating math courses. Students moved from middle to high school without mastering math courses and/or Math TAKS:

  • In 2004-05, about 122 entering 9th graders had failed 8th grade TAKS.
  • In 2005-06, approximately 186 entering 9th graders had failed 8th grade TAKS and were subsequently enrolled in Algebra I at the Ninth Grade Campus.
  • On the 2005 9th grade TAKS, 155 failed.
  • In 2005-06, 150 students moved from 9th to 10th with out a whole credit in Algebra I

All of these students needed remediation. Tricia Rothenberg, Math Coordinator, wanted to find a curriculum to help students that also coincided with the districts philosophy of how to deliver math instruction. The solution she discovered was Carnegie Learning. Tricia states, “the Carnegie curriculum had attributes that the district was looking for: real-world examples, multiple representations, student-centered teacher facilitated, active, higher-level thinking explorations and problem-based learning, and give students the opportunity to construct meaning and understanding.”

Georgetown ISD instituted a pilot program consisting of 100 students who were identified as having the potential to struggle with Algebra I. Fifty were in the class where Carnegie Learning was used as full implementation, and 50 were enrolled in a "traditional" Algebra I class and Algebra I Lab for homework help. Both groups were double blocked for the classes.
The results were outstanding! The outcome from the pilot showed:

  • 38.7% of the students in the control group received Algebra I credit
  • 96% of the Carnegie Learning class received Algebra I credit

With the Carnegie Learning™ Blended Algebra I Solution, the students’ improvements noted by teachers at Georgetown ISD were remarkable. “Students are engaged bell to bell, they have more respect, everyone is accountable, the classroom is a community of learners, and there is a common goal for everyone to meet the standards and to feel success,” said Rothenberg.
