With many states now requiring end-of-course exams, we know that your students need more help than ever to make sure that they are on track to master mathematical concepts and skills. You asked for more content in Algebra II, and we heard you. Carnegie Learning is pleased to announce that we have updated our Algebra II curriculum for 2009-2010 – the curriculum now closely aligns to the Achieve Core standards, a set of rigorous mathematics benchmarks that form the foundation of most state standards.

Our Cognitive Tutor® Algebra II software is now parallel with our all-new Carnegie Learning Algebra II textbook. The software has been updated with 12 new units of instruction, providing more depth of instruction than ever before.

The “big ideas” for 2009 include:

  • Functions: Understanding what a function is, function notation, working with functions, domain, range and inverses.
  • Rational Equations: Setting up and solving rational equations to model real world scenarios with simple rations building to more complex equations.
  • Statistics: Creating/reading/comparing box and whisker plots, calculating variance and standard deviation.

Carnegie Learning’s 2009 Math Webinar Series Continues

The response to our first webinar of the 2009 series was very exciting! If you were not one of the hundreds of people that attended the event, you can still watch the recorded session via our events website. We are still accepting registrations for the remainder of the series, including the next event titled “The Impact of High School Redesign on Teaching Mathematics”. Our FREE Math Webinar Series consists of monthly online seminars featuring top educational leaders, with topics covering Algebra Readiness, End of Course Tests, Developmental Math, and Response to Intervention (RTI).

We hope that you will join us for all of these free online events in 2009! For more information or to register, visit www.carnegielearning.com/events.

Featured Success Story

St. Mary Parish Raises Test Scores

Georgetown, TexasUntil 2006, Louisiana public schools administered the Iowa Tests as their standardized testing. Beginning in spring 2006, due to the Iowa Tests not fulfilling the No Child Left Behind Act, Louisiana’s public schools began to administer the Integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (iLEAP) to public school students in grades 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9. This exam is aligned to state content standards and student results are expressed in terms of the state’s performance standards; Louisiana’s five achievement levels, ranging from Unsatisfactory to Advanced.

Students at Franklin Senior High School in St. Mary Parish School District participated in a Pilot Study sponsored and funded by the Louisiana State Department of Education. The goal of this study was to help students with Algebra readiness. Franklin Senior High School began to use Carnegie Learning™ Bridge to Algebra as a "catch-up" program for students who failed the 8th grade exit exam (Approaching Basic or Unsatisfactory). Krista Majors, a lead math teacher at Franklin Senior High School, set up a pilot class of students who would use Carnegie Learning Bridge to Algebra, and a control group who were mixed in with the regular school population.

According to Majors, the results speak for themselves:

"Students who were enrolled in the pilot class "caught up" with their peers enrolled in regular classes during the first year. They maintained that gain into the second year even though they were no longer enrolled in Carnegie classes. Most students in the control group, who were mixed in with the regular population, either stayed the same or fell further behind."

Cognitive Tutor Updates for 2009
Part 2: Teacher’s Toolkit Curriculum Browser

Carnegie Learning is dedicated to providing you with the best possible solutions for your students. That is why we are constantly improving our Cognitive Tutor software, with new updates usually occurring twice a year.

For the Spring 2009 release, there will be many new features and enhancements. Each month, we’ll discuss one of the new features in our customer newsletter. This month’s feature is the NEW Teacher’s Toolkit Curriculum Browser that will be available in the Spring 2009 release.

The Teacher’s Toolkit Curriculum Browser
This new feature allows instructors to view and print detailed information about each curriculum from within the Teacher’s Toolkit, including unit, section and lesson content. Each individual problem is also available for review.

Furthermore, instructors now have the ability to launch Cognitive Tutor lessons in an “INSTRUCTOR PREVIEW” mode.

Finally, the Curriculum Browser feature allows you to tag a list of “favorite” units in the Cognitive Tutor Curricula. Tagged units can be viewed in the “Create Custom Curriculum” tool and can be inserted into a custom curriculum sequence. Once a custom curriculum sequence is published it will appear in the Curriculum Browser for reference.

For more information about these exciting new features, please contact us using our online form or via phone at 888-851-7094.

Next month’s feature: New Assessment Reports
