Product/Project Manager - Middle School Math

Our Product/Project Manager for Middle School Math will coordinate the development of a new product suite for Middle School Math. Based in Pittsburgh, PA, this position will report to the company’s Senior Vice President.

This position is responsible for establishing and managing product requirements, establishing launch criteria and schedules, working closely with the curriculum, software development teams, and outside consultants to ensure proper implementation and delivery of products, and interacting with key customers to gather and validate requirements. Additionally, it establishes requirements, schedules, and budgets, and coordinates product activities across all functions of the business, including software development, textbook development, professional services, production, and technical support.

To ensure successful development and deployment of products, the Product/Project Manager interacts with sales and marketing, and is involved in product marketing activities, competitive analysis, business intelligence and other areas related to the overall product lifecycle. A strong vision of end-user curriculum requirements, an attention to product usability and detail, and a passion for education are essential. Equally important, this individual must be a self-starter with the energy and initiative to get the job done in a fast-moving environment.

Responsibilities:

Product Management:

  1. Define, create and maintain the Marketing Requirements Document (MRD) for all products. The MRD is the definitive documentation of the current state of any product and provides an integrated view of the product strategy, requirements, processes, budget and schedule.
  2. Contribute to product requirements, specifications, and implementation activities for successful delivery of software and textbook products and subsequent upgrades.
  3. Collect, define, analyze and document product requirements in the context of academic need, industry trends and competitive products. Document competitive threats and related industry news. Develop detailed requirements for each feature. Work closely with the Chief Product Architect and VP Development on technical product definitions.
  4. Work with Sales and Marketing in defining the product/feature positioning and messaging in developing sales collateral, sales training, and customer communications. Provide product expertise to customers/prospects in support of marketing, sales and implementation activities as required.
  5. Communicate with customers on a regular basis. Understand customer needs and define solutions. Define buyer personas and determining market messages. Write white papers and technical communiqués.
  6. Manage the product suite through the product life cycle. Create and execute product launch plans and monitor results
Project Management:
  1. Create and execute project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements. Identify resources needed and assign individual responsibilities, lead an interdepartmental team, and manage day-to-day operational aspects of a project and scope.
  2. Ensure project documents (PRD/Tech Specs) are complete, current, and stored appropriately. Act as the primary author of the PRD (Product Requirements Document). Review Tech Spec documents.
  3. Manage project budget. Track and analyze project profitability, revenue, expenses, margins, bill rates and utilization to assure that the project stays on its financial plan. Manage vendors contributing to project.
  4. Facilitate team, vendor, and customer meetings effectively. Hold regular status meetings with project team. Effectively communicate relevant project information to the senior management team. Resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely fashion.
  5. Possess general understanding in the areas of application programming, database and system design. Maintain awareness of new and emerging technologies and the potential application for Carnegie Learning.
  6. Suggest areas for improvement in internal processes along with possible solutions. Review the status reports of team members and addresses issues as appropriate. Comply with and help to enforce standard policies and procedures.

Software Engineer - Database

The software development team is looking for a highly motivated and talented database developer with Java programming experience. This position offers both a unique engineering challenge and the opportunity to help 500,000 students across the country learn math.

This developer will design, implement, maintain and optimize databases and applications which power the company’s core products. The developer will be a key member on several related projects, including:

  • Convert production transactional data management into a flexible shared-purpose database
  • Update the Learning Management System (LMS), our roster and curriculum data management and reporting system written in Java, to access the database
  • Re-implement and enhance Administrative Reports, a product which presents usage data via customizable external web reports
  • Interface between the product database and internal ERP and CRM systems and external customer web portal

As a member of the engineering design team, the database developer will collaborate on innovative solutions with other software engineers, researchers, quality assurance engineers, project managers, interface designers, and internal operations process owners to develop best of breed hosted instructional software and reporting solutions on schedule and on budget. Typical tasks through the development life-cycle include:

  • Define system requirements by consulting data administrators and system users about the types of information needed, performance, storage and security requirements
  • Determine how data should be organized, who should have access to different data and how it should be accessed and displayed
  • Design, develop and maintain data models and database architecture
  • Construct, install and test the database system and related applications
  • Integrate data flows between independent systems or databases
  • Maintain internal documentation and help draft end-user documentation
  • Prepare reports on databases and consult with others to assess the system performance
  • Modify existing databases, as user needs change
  • Customize databases for specific needs

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field required (or equivalent experience)
  • 5 years of experience building, optimizing and maintaining database and database applications, including internet based transactional systems supporting >10000 concurrent users
  • Proven experience with sizing database hardware, performance tuning, debugging databases, resolving locking issues and deadlock avoidance
  • Experience with Oracle databases and SQL
  • Experience with Java (1.5.x and up) programming language including JDBC and Swing
  • Experience with commercial report generation packages
  • Experience interfacing and synchronization between multiple databases, ETL and reporting is desired
  • Ability to accurately estimate one's work

Director of Finance

The Director of Finance is responsible for the financial operations of the company, including the accounting function.

Major areas of responsibilities include:

  • Planning: Prepare the annual, 3, and 5 year budgets. Update as required. Track progress against plan and provide management reporting as necessary. Provide strategic guidance on financial implications of long-term strategy.
  • Pricing: In conjunction with product management teams, establish, monitor, and modify prices for company products and services. Track product and service profitability and provide pricing analysis for custom bids and proposals. In conjunction with Sales, monitor pricing integrity.
  • Project and Program implementation. As a member of the senior management team, establish and lead cross-functional task forces to accomplish specific projects. Organize and conduct periodic team meetings; report on progress and results to senior management.
  • Accounting Function: Ensure that books are closed accurately and on a timely basis. Fully understand financial statement trends and keep management advised of variances from expectations. Manage the accounting staff, including order entry.
  • Contracts: Negotiate corporate contracts, including complex sales contracts, financing agreements, shareholder matters, etc. Work with outside legal counsel as required.
  • Financial Analysis: Prepare GAAP financial statements, and management reporting as required to optimize the running of the company, and to maximize the profitability of the company. Use company CRM and accounting system data to improve decision-making at all levels of the company. Help coordinate implementation of new Oracle CRM and Financial system in 2008-2009.
  • Decision-making: As a part of the senior management team of the company, the Director of Finance will contribute significantly to management decision-making. We want someone who will make sound recommendations and then be prepared to carry them out. Decisiveness is key – we cannot be bogged down with analysis paralysis.
  • Investor Relations: Communicate with the Board of Directors, and with investors as applicable, on all financial matters relating to the company. Successful candidate will be a confident presenter.

    The Director of Finance is responsible for establishing, directing and coordinating all financial accounting operations and reporting, including analysis and interpretation. The Director of Finance recommends major accounting objectives and policies.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • Six or more years experience in accounting with demonstrated progressive responsibility, including national accounting firm experience.
  • Previous staff management experience.
  • Proficiency with personal computing applications as well as specific financial accounting applications.
  • Desire and ability to be both hands-on and an effective delegator and manager.

Desktop Support Specialist

The Desktop Support Specialist is responsible for the support of end user computing at Carnegie Learning. Responsibilities include coordination of day-to-day desktop computing issues including computers, printers, and fax machines.

In addition to the day-to-day responsibilities, The Desktop Support Specialist will assist on projects as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Install and configure hardware and applications on new or existing machines.
  • Install and configure new telephones and extensions on corporate phone system.
  • Troubleshoot end user issues with corporate business applications and hardware.

  • Prepare nightly tape backup of servers and maintain appropriate filing of tapes in data center.

Ideal Candidate Requirements:

  • Minimum of Associates Degree in related technology field
  • 2-3 years experience in desktop support position
  • Understanding of networking technologies and concepts (TCP/IP, DHCP, VPN, VLAN, Ethernet, AppleTalk)
